Whether you give your computer equipment away, sell it, or throw it in the dumpster, you need to take precautions to protect your privacy by permanently deleting all data. This will ensure your confidential data does not get recovered and lead to you becoming a victim of identity theft. People get rid of old computers or replace their hard drives when needs and technologies change, which unbeknownst to them, can lead to identity theft. If you own a computer, most likely you will end up replacing it at some point in your future. There are a few tips you must remember to protect yourself when the time does come.
Be cautious of who you give your computer to for repairs or clean up. Make sure that when it does come time to have your hard drive replaced, they do what they say they are going to do. Most people will take the word of the store employee and bypass erasing any of the information on the hard drive on their own. Because of this, when the computer is sold and sits in the hands of stranger, the new owner has the ability to pull up all of your sensitive information on your hard drive.
Simply pressing the delete button, emptying the Recycle Bin or even formatting the drive doesn’t get rid of files, it just deletes its entry in the index for the hard drive. If you only delete the files, they can be undeleted and formatted hard drives can be recovered. There are plenty of shareware programs and machines that can recover data from your computer deletion process. How else would the police be able to dig up the evidence they need if the suspect had already deleted everything?
The best way to make sure your hard drive is completely free of your information is by using a program designed to scrub your hard drive of everything. There is a number of “digital shredding” software programs available on the internet and most are very effective. I would do a little research before making the purchase. To give yourself the piece of mind of knowing that you won’t be the next victim of identity theft, make sure you use the program to completely wipe your hard drive of everything you don’t want anyone to have knowledge of.
Below are some simple guidelines to follow to ensure your success:
1. Give the Computer to a Trusted Employee, Friend or Family Member
If you trust who you give it to, I wouldn’t put a lot of effort into destroying data. Recovering deleted data isn’t automatic. A thief or con artist will have to get some specialized software and learn to use it. The average honest person would have to sift through a bunch of boring stuff to find anything damaging to your identity. If this isnt your case, follow step 2, which is a little more drastic.
2. Reformat the Hard Drive and Re-install the Operating System
I believe this step to be very difficult for someone that is not computer savvy, such as myself. Reformatting a disk prepares it to accept a new operating system. It also wipes out everything on the hard drive. That’s your goal. Past versions of Windows (through Windows ME) allow you to create a start-up disk. You’ll need one to reformat your hard drive. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Click Start-up Disk. Click Create Disk. On Windows XP, you’ll need to download the disk information. Go to BootDisk.com and click “DOS – Windows 9X/NT4/2000/XP Excellent Bootdisks.” Download the Windows XP Custom Install Disk and save it to a floppy. On all systems, shut down all open programs. Restart the computer with the floppy in the A: drive. At the A: prompt, type Format: C. Answer “yes” to the warning; you want to wipe out all the data. When the reformat finishes, put the Windows installation CD in the CD drive and remove the floppy. Restart and re-install Windows. If you dont know much about computer at all, step 3 will be your best option.
3. Buy Software and Overwrite the Disk, Again and Again and Again
There are several programs that write a bunch of nothing to the hard drive. They claim that nobody will be able to find your files after the software is utilized. You can leave the operating system and other files on the hard disk, if you want. These programs can be set to overwrite only the unoccupied areas. The process can be slow, because they write to the disk repeatedly. You might want to run it overnight. Whether you eventually decide to give your computer to a trusted friend, or sell it to a stranger or company, I believe you now have all the necessary tools to prevent yourself from becoming one of the 9 million victims of identity theft.
