If you are new to Twitter, or you are not getting much followers, this simple guide is right for you. Your page seems blank, and you don’t know where to start, don’t panic. First thing you need to do is to find people.

When you are signed into your Twitter account, go to the search textbox in the upper right hand corner.
Let’s say your blog is about iPhone apps. You can type in “iPhone app” in the search box. Then you will find other Tweeters (people on Twitter.com) that are also talking about iPhone apps. Click on their username to get to their Twitter page. When you are on their Twitter page, there is a Follow button right underneath their photo. Now you are following the person, and the person will have a notification in their Followers list that you are following that person. Not everyone will follow you back just because you are following them. Some Tweeters will follow you back regardless whether or not they know you.

If you have been on Twitter for awhile, but not getting many followers, there are a few things that you can do to improve the amount of followers. Are you following some Tweeters who seem to be bots? For example, Tweeters who make posts every 5 minutes about “Make thousands of dollars part-time with no experience necessary. Go to (link)”. You need to remove them. Most likely these bots are not following you back because they are not human. When you are following a lot more people than you have people following you, that does not look attractive at all to people who might decide to follow you. For example, you are following 30,000 Tweeters, but only 500 people are following you. It is time for you to remove some of the Tweeters you are following. Go on your Twitter main page, and you should see on the upper right hand corner: Following / Followers / Updates.

Click on Following, and now you see bunch of Tweeter users that you are following. The ones that have a “Direct Message” are also following you. The ones that don’t have “Direct Message” means they are not following you. The list of people are organized based on most recently added to last. You don’t want to remove the recently added people who didn’t follow you because you have to give people time. Not everyone checks Twitter often. Down at the bottom is a Next button. Just keep hitting next. You will start to see people that you have added a while back. Start removing the people who have not contributed much to the community, spammers, or didn’t follow you back. Don’t remove professional bloggers. Even if they don’t follow you, they have very good informative posts that you should pay attention to. Learn from them!

Another way to increase your followers is to post useful messages in your main page. Post in the text box that says, “What are you doing?”. You should post on there often, but make sure it is informative. When people use the Search, people can find you with keywords that they typed into the search box if your posts have the relevant keywords. If people can learn from your posts, you will definitely see an increase in followers. Do not be a spammer just to advertise a link to your website. Be helpful, and people will thank you.

If you are a local business, select only tweets from people in your city. Use one of the many programs available to separate your findings and respond only to potential customers.

13 – Respond to the tweets of the selected group with some useful advices or comments.

14 – Follow all the people in the selected group so most of them will follow you.

15 – Use Retweetlist to track and monitor how many times your tweets have been retweeted. This will give you an indication of the influence of your tweets on your followers.

To download the Twitter for Android application, visit the Marketplace application from your Droids home screen.

One Marketplace is open, touch the search button which looks like a magnifying glass in the upper right corner. Next you will need to type in twitter. Once the different applications show up on your screen, you will want to choose the top one which is a small blue t with Twitter, Inc. underneath in smaller letters. Touch it and then choose download.

Now that it is on your home screen, touch it to open it. To get started you simply need to add your login and password and you are up and tweeting. By the way, this is for folks who already have a twitter account setup.

You will notice on your twitter home page the following icons, Tweets, Lists, Mentions, Retweets, Direct messages, My profile, and also different words popping up on the bottom of the screen.

Each time you enter your twitter application you will notice there is a number underneath the Tweets icon; this is how many new tweets have been sent by people you are following since the last time you used the application.

The different words popping up on the bottom of the home twitter screen is the trending topics. To access the trending topics simply touch the bird down at the bottom of the screen.

You will notice there is a Current, Daily, and Weekly tabs at the top of the trending page. Simply touch the one you want to view. Each tab must be manually refreshed by touching the refresh arrows that form a circle in the dark blue menu bar above the tabs.

To see all the tweets for a trending word, simply touch the word and a page opens with all people who are using that particular word in one of their tweets. You can also access an individual trending word by touching it from the bottom of the twitter home page as it pops up around the bird.

From the home page you can also change some of twitters default settings for Android by touching your phones menu button. This will then bring up a tool bar at the bottom of the page which has a settings icon, touching it will take you into the screen where you can make any changes you desire.

If you want to search for people or tweets with a particular name, touch the magnifying glass at the top left on twitters home page. Too switch between people or tweets, touch the icon with the small t in it on the far left side of the top menu, then choose which one to search.

- Craigs List. This is a free resource for advertising your needs. Post an ad on either your city’s craigslist or on one of the larger, more tech-savvy cities. Austin and San Francisco would be good bets.

When posting your request, specify that you want your sites created in HTML. This will provide sites that someone else can edit easily. Plus the search engines find HTML pages easy to read and index. The only exception to this would be a blog site, which should use WordPress.

Well into its ninth season and still dominating TV Primetime, American Idol has become a TV ratings behemoth and with Coke, AT&T and Ford as anchor sponsors, it is an awesome corporate marketing and advertising machine.

Idol undeniably has created a new business model for the music industry. That paradigm is: introducing new artists via TV, with contestants’ exposure, branding and development underwritten by corporate sponsors, with TV viewers voting to select the show’s finalists and the annual winner – who is given a lucrative recording contract and goes on to sell millions of CDs.

And while Idol can boast having nine of its alums going platinum (selling one million or more units of an album), led by Country Pop “America’s Sweetheart” Carrie Underwood’s 11.5 million total CDs sold, that in itself is not a particularly strong track record. Considering the thousands of contestants that show up for Idol castings, the hundreds who actually participate in its auditions and Idol’s unique ability to market its contestants to millions of TV viewers weekly, Idol should have at least 20 platinum artists by now. Or, at least a dozen. And, lately there appear to be some major cracks in the Idol marketing machine.

A fundamental flaw of Idol is that it allows fans to multi-text votes, so that Idol’s “millions of votes,” on a given night, are actually inflated numbers – with mostly pubescent girls and conservative voters stuffing the ballot box with multiple votes for primarily “safe,” middle-of-the-road artists. This skews Idol’s voting and makes it very difficult for more talented, but edgy or controversial artists such as Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry to win their respective competitions -which both deserved to win, but didn’t. Multi-texting is great for AT&T’s network use and revenues, but it’s a flawed voting system.

Multi-voting also has made Idol vulnerable to those who would make it a self-parody. There is at least one Blog site that prides itself on picking the weakest Idol candidate early on, and encourages its Blog mates to stuff the ballot box and keep that candidate in the running as long as possible. It was this kind of tomfoolery that kept Sanjaya Malakar alive in his season’s competition, long past the limits of human comprehension and suffering. Its goal this year? To turn the ever-smiling, musically talentless Tim Urban into this season’s winner. The answer to these abuses? Limit each phone number to one text per show.

The third thing wrong with Idol is that while its judges frequently chastise contestants for picking songs inappropriate to their individual genres and personal strengths, the judges themselves instruct Idol singers to choose songs incompatible to their comfort zones and abilities. The judges have their young minions choose songs from arcane chapters of the American songbook, with soul singers singing Dolly Parton. Or, Neil Diamond. Or, rockers singing vintage Motown. And then, they have the temerity to accuse their protégés of being artistically unfocused and ambivalent. The answer to this problem? Have a separate panel of industry experts select more contemporary and genre-specific songs for all candidates- starting from the earliest rounds.

A fourth thing wrong with Idol is that in its apparent fervor to capitalize on the success of Glee, it lumps young singers into horrible group sing-alongs, again, in genres that have nothing to do with the singers’ abilities or styles. First of all, Idol’s judging is not supposed to be predicated on whether a contestant is a good background or studio session singer. Supposedly, the show is looking for great lead singers who are – or can become unique and successful recording artists. So, forcing them to participate in these insipid sing-alongs is both counter-intuitive to the entire Idol screening process – and forces the audience to listen to painful corny vocal performances reminiscent of The Lawrence Welk Show. The solution? Stop the mindless group sing-along’s.

The fifth thing wrong with Idol is that at the end of this season, Simon Cowell is leaving. However acerbic, Cowell is the one judge who understands how to match songs appropriately with contestants’ talents and genres. He also is the only judge who doesn’t mind sacrificing being likeable for giving impressionable young contestants honest constructive criticism. His cutting criticism, wit and discernment will surely be missed.

While Randy Jackson has been in the recording industry for years and is a likeable person, who can name an artist that he discovered or produced – or who went platinum through his efforts? And while Kara Dio Guardi admittedly has had a number of record cuts, they have mostly been with Pop R&B female artists, who can hardly be called “cutting edge.”

Idol’s other judge, Ellen DeGeneres is a fine comedian and seems like a nice person, but what the hell is she doing trying to judge singing talent? If Idol is to restore its fast-waning credibility with the record industry and the public, as well as retain its high TV ratings, it needs to adapt. The show’s producers should:

1) Limit voting to one text per phone number per show.

2) Have industry judges select more contemporary and genre-specific material for each contestant.

3) End the wretched group sing-alongs.

4) Expand the competition and award an annual winner in perhaps four widely disparate categories: Alt-Rock, R&B Pop, Country and Gospel. It’s simply stupid to have a Country artist competing against a Pop- R&B or Alt-Rock act. Why not award the BEST talent in EACH specific genre, instead of trying to judge “chalk versus cheese?”

5) Expand the competition to include groups in different genres. There obviously are some great Alt-Rock, R&B-Pop and Country acts out there that deserve a shot at the Big Time.

6) Add a judge or two that has more “street cred” – some edgier instincts and solid track record.

If Idol is willing to make these changes, we believe it can restore its lagging credibility, as well as expand its net to include bands and edgier artists that it now ignores or who now cannot fairly compete.

If you’ve been on Twitter for a while and haven’t heard of the Twitter hash tag, then it’s high time you added it to your Twitter arsenal. First a hash tag is a # symbol placed before specific keywords or keyword phrases to make your content and interests easy to find.

For instance, if you’re a Battlestar Galactica fan and you want to find other fans with the same interests, then you would put a #Battlestar or #BSG in the search box. It will return everyone who had #Battlestar or #BSG in their tweet.

People search tweets looking for common topics. For instance, hash tags make it that much easier to search for something specific that is a common word. It doesn’t matter about if you search for with all CAPS, caps and lowercase or a combination of both. These tags aren’t case-sensitive.

Searching for something like “Star Trek”, as an example, has the word “star” and “trek” in it. Instead of searching on “Star Trek” and getting back tweets on stars and trek bikes. Adding hash tags separates tweets will stand a much higher chance of bringing back proper tweets that interest you.

Also, hash tags allow you to organize your own tweets so that your friends and followers can easily find it. For those who know how to use the tags, they can find your tweets on a common topic quickly and easily. It also makes it easy to use the 140 characters for most of your tweet without having to add the subject to it.

For instance, if you write about Spock and T’Pring getting married adding a hash tag that says #trek to it will only take up five characters, and most people will know to look for #star-trek or #trek as part of the search. So, even if you don’t have “Star Trek” in your tweet, people who are interested in Spock will still find you.

Up until now, you’ve seen hash tags as a way of finding entertainment topics. However, these same tags can be used with anything. Anybody can start a hash tag, but it is nice to search on the tag you want to add prior to using it. Tags are organic and can go viral.

If your tag is universal enough, you can see it become part of a number of tweets. Right now, for instance, the tag #avatar is very popular as is the tag #Obama and #healthcare. One is for the movie, Avatar and the other two for the President and the ongoing healthcare debate in Congress.

As you can see Twitter hash tags are quite useful and adds to the ease and utility of searching for topics that interest you.

You need to make sure that your hashtags and topics are of the utmost relevance and usefulness to the people who are following you and to people who will be searching for you.

Starting your own hashtags

Hashtags can be used effectively to track social media campaigns that assist in creating a strong sense of community; a community that unifies your clients and colleagues with you. The first thing that you need to do in starting your own hashtag is to choose a tag word.

The tag word should be something that can be easily remembered, is easy to spell, and is as short as possible.
