This article is about “You do not have permission to do that. wordpress video”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “You do not have permission to do that. wordpress video”:

The general settings sub-panel has general information,s uch as, the title, the tagline, email address and date formatting that you’ll usually need to enter once and then not change again.

The title and tagline are the first two lines at the top of the general settings page.

The title line, along with the tagline, are used in most themes and also in rss feeds and atom feeds.

Any changes that are saved to the title or tagline are reflected immediately.

The next line is the WordPress address (url). It is the location of all the core WordPress programs. Make sure the complete url, including the http:// appears as in the initial installation. You can add the www to the url for a more familiar look. (But a word of caution: when you add the www and save the screen WordPress will log you out and ask you to re-enter the site. This is the normal process)

if you installed WordPress to a sub-directory then this url should include that sub directory as part of the complete address.

The address (url) is typically the same address as the WordPress address (url). These can be different if you installed the WordPress program files in it’s own separate directory ( for instance /blog ) and you wanted people to type only the simpler homepage address without the /blog then this is where you give WordPress that information. For most installations the WordPress address and the site address are the same.

The e-mail address is used by WordPress to send you notifications and email alerts about maintenance and administration issues. When someone registers then WordPress will send you a notification at this email address. Or if you are moderating your comments then this email address will be sent a notification that a comment is being held for approval. The email address you enter here will not be displayed. You can change this to any valid e-mail address you want.

The membership option is used to register users. Membership grants different levels of access content and even it’s operation.

WordPress is set up so you can have others involved.

If you check this box then everyone will be register automatically. Membership has five levels each with increasing access. A new member is initially entered at the default subscriber level. Although you can change this on the line below.

If you leave this unchecked then you will need to manually register all of the users under the users link on the navigation panel.

Just below the membership button are the 5 different membership levels. These levels determine what access each member has. The higher the level the more options available. Setting this line will determine the initial level each new user will have.

The default is subscriber.

A subscriber has access to the dashboard screen and they can view and change options in their profiles under the your profiles and the personal options page. They do not have access to any of the site account settings.

When a subscriber logs in at the /wp-admin screen they will have access to this screen.

This is the subscriber panel access screen where their personal changes are made.

A contributor has all the access of a subscriber plus permission to upload files and to write, edit and manage their own posts. A contributor cannot however publish a post, the posts are reviewed by the administrator who decides if the post is to be published.

The contributor screen looks like this. With access to the post screen.

Authors have the access of the contributor but with the added benefit of publishing their own post without admin approval. They have access to post and publish functions as well as access to media files.

Editors have all the access to authors but they can moderate comments, manage categories and links, edit pages from other authors posts.

Administrator has full access to all the functions and operation.

The timezone is where you set your local time clock in relation to the utc or coordinated universal time standard which is roughly equivalent to gmt or greenwich mean time.

If you’re a young musician wanting to break into the world of the West End theatre orchestras, where do you start?

It is impossible to walk into a West End pit job (or “hold a chair”) with no previous experience. Therefore, your first task is to deputise for the existing players in a show.

It may come as a surprise that players who hold a chair would need a deputy. You might expect a chair holder to play at all performances, but there is an unwritten rule that says that players can take some shows off. It might be because they have other commitments, taken on before being offered the show. I first depped in the West End because the keyboard player in the show Me and My Girl was also the assistant musical director, and needed to conduct at least one show a week.

If you want to deputise as a musical theatre pit musician, put yourself in the mindset of the orchestral player you want to work for. If a musical theater orchestral player needs a dep (and they do, quite frequently), there are at least seven things they look for in a musician.

1. Can you do the job? The West End is the highest arena for orchestral pit playing in musical theatre. The players are, without exception, extremely good at what they do. Are you up to the standard of everyone else? When you hit the West End, everyone expects you to be able to play the notes in time, in tune and in style – that’s a given. You need to demonstrate that you can play the instruments, play the music and fit in with the existing ensemble with the minimum of fuss.

2. Will you get on with the other players? Bear in mind that the musician you’re depping for will not be there when you work in the pit. If in your first performance as a dep, you annoy the people around you, you won’t be asked again. Getting on with your colleagues is as vital as getting on with your sponsoring musician. Will you fit into the social structure? The job is as important in the off-duty moments as the playing moments. If you can show that to the musician you’re depping for, you’re half way there.

3. Can you sightread superbly? You’ll probably be sightreading or reading music at very short notice – make sure you can do this (and count the bars rest of course). Most budding deputies in the West End begin by sitting next to the sponsoring musician in the pit once or twice. They then dep the following day, or later that week, or occasionally a month later. When you’re sitting in the pit next to your sponsoring musician, notice the difficult or exposed entries or the solos. Your playing will be judged on those later!

4. Does the fixer know you? West End theatre musicians are ALWAYS employed by an MU-approved orchestral fixer. It isn’t possible to work as a musician in a West End show otherwise (in fact, it’s illegal). Therefore you have to be known not only to the player but to the fixer as well. Check out the list of fixers (the Musicians’ Union can give you a list), and contact them too. If the fixer hears about you from different sources (personal approach or recommendation by another player), you’re more likely to get a foot onto the dep ladder. In my own case as a pianist, things were slightly different in that I got my name around without a fixer as a solo and rehearsal pianist – but once I got onto two fixers’ books, I was in work for six years without playing for anyone else.

5. Do you know the show, the style, the feel of the music? It’s not only competitive, the jobs are RARE! Do anything you can to know more than the other potential deputies. Take every opportunity can to see the shows you are interested in (and those you’re not), get to know the music, the style, the players. When I first worked on Les Miserables, I was asked back because I’d spent time learning the show before I arrived on the first day, and I knew it better than any other dep they’d had before.

6. What is your playing like? The sponsoring musician needs to know your playing. You’re up against other potential deps who have probably been taught by the chair holders themselves. The chair holder already has knowledge of their playing ability and their personality. Rather than taking your instrument in to a show and asking someone to hear you, booking a lesson from the resident player might be a good move. A coaching session or two on pieces, techniques and (maybe) pit-playing advice would give the player a chance to hear and work with you (and be paid for it).

7. It’s essential that you play a range of instruments. Almost all woodwind pit parts are for doubling and trebling, and if you can do flute, picc, sax AND clarinet, you’ve got a headstart. Even with the traditional musicals like Oklahoma, the wind parts are for treblers (usually clarinet/sax/flute, but occasionally for clarinet/bassoon or even flute/oboe).

And finally, expect to do some touring before working on a West End show. It’s a fairly tricky career to break into. I had been touring the UK and Europe for some time gaining experience as a pit performer before I received regular invitations to play in a West End show.

If you are determined, dedication and focus can help you get where you want to be.

This article is about “Google blog claim wordpress mu”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Google blog claim wordpress mu”:

Many of you have heard the buzz about the new network marketing online phenomenon, LiveSmart 360. Those of you that have become part of the company may have experienced information overload. LiveSmart 360 has been the first legitimate network marketing company to exploit social media, while maintaining its traditional business model. However, the dizzying pace in which the company communicates with its people, coupled with the multiple social media outlets that it uses, can become overwhelming.

Twitter, Facebook, blogging, nightly conference calls, team conference calls, full time job, kids, and the list goes on. Who has time for all of this? It’s not a question of time, it is a question of organization and filtering.

LiveSmart 360 is simply doing what most companies won’t do, communicating with their people. And just like any other information that’s out there, we must apply filters. Picture trying to watch every news channel, read every newspaper, and listen to every radio news broadcast daily. It would be ridiculous. You must apply filters. You probably have your main source of news and you perhaps check a few others every now and then.

Applying this principle to your LiveSmart 360 network marketing business, you would simply pick your favorite form of social media. For example, if you love blogging, pick the LiveSmart 360 blog. It is the most comprehensive, up to date source of news from LiveSmart 360. You can find pre-recorded conference calls as well as an array of informational pdf’s and brochures.

If you are a Facebook fan, hang out at the LiveSmart 360 Facebook page. There, you can connect with other LiveSmart 360 members and find similar personalities.

If you are a Twitter tweeter, check out the LiveSmart 360 twitter page. If you’re in a crunch and need your information short and sweet, this is the place for you.

The nightly conference calls are great for staying plugged in. Bring as many people as you want so that they might hear from others all over the world. LiveSmart 360 is global.

You can also use the online chat if you haven’t found answers from all of the other sources.

AS you can see, with LiveSmart 360, you don’t have to go to all sources, all the time. That would be like shooting a rabbit with a cannon, it’s effective…..but you have no more rabbit! Use filtering.

This article is about “Are you sure you want to do this theme upload wordpress”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Are you sure you want to do this theme upload wordpress”:

As with all my WordPress articles you will find they are written in a plain English, easy to understand way so that regardless of anyone’s expertise level you will always understand them and this article “how to use Plugins” is no exception.

A Quick Background

A Plugin or PLG for short is really like an add on that you can use with your WordPress blog so that you create a more enhanced, more exciting, user friendly blog. There normally free and very easy to use, in fact the only work you need do is really installing them.

In a nutshell they make your blogging experience a lot more fruitful and so too your readers.

There are literally thousands of PLG’s that are available to use right now either within your WordPress admin panel or out there in Google land.

An example of one would be to make your blog more search engine friendly or to link your blog to Facebook. Perhaps you want to have a photo album on your blog or you want to do stuff with videos or stop people stealing your posts. A Plugin will allow you to do these things and a whole lot more and without you ever having to know the technical side of it, just install one and play.

How Do We Install One

Well first thing you need do is decide what you actually want one for. On my site for instance I have PLG’s for Twitter and Facebook plus other social sites with nice looking buttons that people can click. I have ones that let me choose where certain posts or articles will appear. I also have one that lets Google find my site and list it for higher search ranking. So decide first what it is your trying to achieve.

Now log into you WordPress admin panel and scroll down the far let column under Dashboard until you see Plugins. Click the Add New where you will be presented with the chance to search. You can either do 1 or 2 things here. Either look in the large search box to see if any of the keywords are similar to what you are looking to do, if so click on that word and see what becomes available. If you see something that matches what you want to do then simply click the install button in the box of the one you have chosen and once installed click the activate button. The PLG is now on your blog and ready to use.

If however there is nothing in the large search box to match your ideas then try putting a relevant word in the small search box above. If you see something to match your wants then as before simply install and activate.

Still Not Found The Right One

Even though WordPress has many many plugins within the admin panel it can be quite common still not to find the right one. In this case we just have to widen our search horizons by using an engine such as Google or Yahoo to find the correct one. Admittedly this way takes a little bit longer but its hardly a killer.

Again type in what your looking for in the Google box and see what results appear then go to a page that looks good, see if its the type of PLG you want then download it. There is normally a big download button for easy installation on these pages.

NB: Now remember where your downloading it to on your computer. I tend to create a separate file on my desktop just for this purpose just to keep things nice and clean. To create a special file simply go to your computers home page (Desk Top), the one where you see all the icons when you start your computer. Now right click your mouse then click on New then click on Folder at the top. Rename it something your remember, you have now created a new folder.

So download the Plugin and choose to store it into your new folder, once this is done go to your WordPress admin panel/Dashboard, go to Add New in the Plugin section on the left hand column and click. What you will do now is click on the Upload link (in blue) at the top of the page then hit browse. Go to the new file you created with the download in ( this will be located in Desk Top). Double click on the link in this file. You should now see this in the browse box of your admin panel, click install now and then activate. There we are done. Took a little bit longer but I am sure it did not hurt.

Using your newly Activated Plugin.

It really depends on the type you have installed in regards to what you do now. Some such as Google Site Map (helps Google find your blog) require no touching at all but others may need you to put in information manually. To be honest there pretty self explanatory. If you have one that needs placing somewhere on your blog like social media buttons then obviously your going to have to decide where there to go.

Generally you will find any PLG’s, that require additional input, to be under the settings tab which is at the very bottom of your Dashboard panel on the left hand side. You will then see the name of your Plugin, just click on that and follow the instructions.

In others you may see them when writing new posts or building new pages. They will be there waiting to be used at the appropriate time.

Congratulations you now know how to use Plugins.

This article is about “Plumbing wordpress theme”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Plumbing wordpress theme”:

If you have a deep well for you home water supply and need a new pump, or if you are planning to drill a new deep well, you have probably been looking for information on deep well jet pumps. These pumps are widely used in deep wells for good reason, they do the job well. This type of pump is submerged into the well itself and moves the water by means of a jet stream which creates sufficient suction to move the water to the surface.

When deciding on a new or replacement deep well jet pump, you first need to decide on how much water you need the pump to supply and what kind of water pressure you need. Pumps vary in capacity from about a hundred gallons per hour up to a thousand gallons per hour. If you are not sure on what rate you need, you can consult a plumber or one of the friendly workers are Home Depot or Lowes. Of course, you need to take any such advice with a grain of salt, and you your own research. If you are replacing a pump and the flow and pressure of the old pump was acceptable, then you can just get a pump of equal or greater capacity.

Some of the most popular brands of deep well jet pump include Flotec, Gould, Simer, Little Giant, and Sears. Specifications and prices are widely available online. You might want to get the pump professionally installed to make sure you are compliant with all applicable health and safety regulations.

This article is about “WordPress eStore Plugin free download”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “WordPress eStore Plugin free download”:

Many of my professional peers that are webmasters, designers and hosting sellers have told me that dumbing it down doesn’t help. I find that to be arrogant because it’s one thing to dumb it down and another thing to make it understandable to those that are not IT professionals.

And I think the order of the tasks are not clearly defined.

So, you want / need a website. OK, fine. Now what do you do? Shop for hosting right?

I say no and here’s why:

Let’s just say you have a service business and you have your van and tools for the job.

Then after working with clients for some time, you notice that there is an opportunity to provide services that are not part of your current skill set.

Do you just go out and buy the necessary equipment, put that in the van and add this service to your price list?

Some people do but then when hired to provide that service or to quote a customer on performing the service, do you have the knowledge and additional training to provide it that will be satisfactory manner that the client will like, want and appreciate?

Or will you use this client as a guinea pig to test your new equipment.

I’m a webmaster, I sell hosting and design / program websites. And I can’t tell how many time I have had to pass on website projects because they are worm holes.

The problem is that the client wants a website because someone told them they needed one or a client of theirs asked for their website URL and the light bulb went off alerting them that they need a website.

Now If I go into a restaurant and after being seated, the wait person comes over to take my order and I say: Can you bring me some dinner, thank you. What did I just order?

The wait staff has no clue because I didn’t really tell them anything that they could use to fill my request!

This happens a lot when clients come to me for websites. “I need a website for my business”. OK you may ask: “What kind of business do you have?” or you may ask: “What do want the site to do for your business?”.

Most clients don’t know. Some will even get upset and say: You’re the web person, that’s why I came to you.

That is the worst kind of client and I will normally pass that person on to someone else. Because in my experience this person will not be satisfied no matter what you do.

I do try to explain to that kind of client that I want to build a website that will help build your business and satisfy your requirements. But the client has to first have some real business-related requirements.

Now I don’t to give the appearance that I only cater to a certain clientele but I also want you to know that a large portion of clients who contract out for websites are not happy with the results and blame webmasters for not delivering on what they wanted their website to do for them and their business.

The first thing I have asked clients that have come to me to have prior work reconfigured or totally rebuilt is: “What did you want done that the other design company didn’t do for you?” And: “What planning paperwork or website specs did you provide the other web designer?”

generally they didn’t have a plan going in and still don’t have a clear idea what they want.

I say all of this to make the point that website designers, web hosting sellers, and other IT professionals are not mind readers and if you as a client can’t explain what you want in a website to one of your co-workers to the point that they can see your vision, then how do expect a person, not part of your company/group/organization to know what you need?

But once you can describe in detail what you want, or even if you can explain what you need the website to accomplish but are short on detail, then most professional web designers/webmasters can make recommendations to the client about what will help you to reach your goal.

To walk in/call/email a designer without a plan is like telling a contractor to build you a house with three bedrooms and a couple of bathrooms. What do you think you will end up with when the contractors are done?

To make sure that you will be happy with the final outcome, sit down with your staff, members or family and mock up the site on paper. Visit other sites built for companies/organizations similar to yours.

Make screen captures of the pages you like. make notes how you would change those to fit your need.

Make sure that you get enough website to satisfy your need, allow for growth but avoid paying for more than you need or will even use.

It is possible, for example, to use freely available tools and software instead of paying for a full custom job that will lock you into one design company.

Consider that the #1 blogging platform in use by professionals from MSNBC, CNN, Fortune 500 and others is: WordPress. WordPress software is FREE!!!

Most hosting packages you can get now offer a script that allows you to fill out the form and click a button and your blog is ready for your content! Just like that!

Now where you may need some help is finding new themes and customizing WordPress with your logo and catch phrases. Instead of paying $1,000+ for a custom website, pay a few hundred to have WordPress customised or buy a professionally created theme from people like TemplateMonstor.com or you can use one of the hundreds of free themes available for WordPress on their site and as far as the Google can see.

Do you need a store to sell your products? Consider whether you need a full-blown eStore or do you just have a few products to sell or a book to sell per blog entry. Use PayPay Buy Buttons that can be inserted into the blog post and accept credit / debit card from your potential clients.

If you need a full-blown store, consider osCommerce stand alone eStore software or if you have a site based on Joomla (also free) the Virtuemart software modules are free and make for a very professional and stylish storefront.

The problems most people have is tweaking the software to meet your individual goals. This is where you find people with the skill set to provide those tweaks.

That work is far cheaper than having someone or some company create a full-blown site. Because all they’re doing is is making cosmetic changes or installing modules.

Your website will come online faster and if you have people in your organization that can use MS Publisher, MS Word, Photoshop, Fireworks and others, then you have the talent to work on your site.

Because the software is freely available, you can have these “Media Types” download the software and play with it on their computers. Once they demonstrate on a local system that they have the talent and knowledge to make successful modifications to WordPress, Joomla and others, you can apply those changes to the live site online with the confidence that your design ideas will transfer as you expect.

This also opens the door for those young minds to get a taste of web design for free in a safe and controlled environment – their own computer!

You can visit the Team Far North website for info about hosting for internet marketers but can be applied to any project. Investigating some of the articles there can give you an idea of how to plan for a site and how to do the research that allows you to stay in control.

I mentioned Joomla, Joomla is a CMS (Content Management System), I and many others use this as their main website. The beauty of Joomla is that you can post articles that go live right now or you can schedule them to appear and disappear based on your schedule.

I add my Halloween and Christmas articles in July and August. That way I can handle the in-town activities and / or take vacation without worrying about my site not being updated.

Now if I have a breaking story, I can always add that into the rotation with no problem. Joomla is setup to accept Google AdSense ads or ads from your local community.

Joomla also has hundreds or free and pay themes for you to choose from. Check out this demo Joomla site I use to show client how easy it is to create a site using Joomla and apply a theme. Normally it takes 10 minutes depending on the internet connection.

The same with WordPress, WordPress will scare you in that you have one form to fill out and then you copy the temporary password they create for you and you log in. Your Done!

Don’t make this harder than it has to be and be willing to approach a problem from more than one direction.

Don’t get discouraged if your dream solution turns into the impossible solution. Instead review your dream solution using a reality filter and decide what is important and necessary vs the wants and desires that your favorite Star Trek or crime show may have influenced.

Seriously consider if you, the client are the best person to make this decision.

maybe you need to speak to your neighborhood geek and share with them what you want and have them tell what is realistic and possible. Then refactor your website design based on that knowledge, considering your budget and timeline.

The bottom line is this: Web designers/coders are not mind readers. They don’t know how every business works and can’t think for you the client.

If you, the client, can’t explain your desired website wishes / request to a co-worker / member of your organization that may know what the needs are just like you but are having a hard time figuring out what you mean or what you want, how can you expect someone not familiar with your organization to know what you want or need.

Don’t get buried in so-called Web 2.0 requirements. If you need the site to have handicap access, WordPress and Joomla either have that built in or you can get a plugin / module to make that happen. Most of the time those additional add-ins are free.

Know the difference between a Windows Hosted site and UnixLinex Hosted site.

Most of the site online are Unix/Linex hosted sites.

Some sites offer database access. If you need to track members/employees, use WordPress, Joomla, or any of the productivity software, you will need a database.

There are some blog packages like Simplicity that don’t require a database and are used on smaller sites. The tiny space most ISP’s give you when you get internet service from can run Simplicity (and not mush else other than plain HTML pages)

After saying all of this, there are people that still don’t want to be bothered with all of this and would like a simple package ready to go and all it needs is to have content added to it. The Arctic Fox Mall Hosting package is one that I found that gives you a ready to go package waiting for content.

Understand that hosting means the hosting company gives you the web real estate and you are responsible for putting houses (web pages) on the property.

If you have problems getting your pages to work because of your own lack of knowledge, the hosting company is not responsible for solving your coding problems. Now if you have known working code but something on the hosting package is not working, then the hosting service needs to address that.

Instead of throwing away your old computer, use it as a test web server. Put PHP on it and test run WordPress, Joomla and others. PHP is free as well.

The software above features training and F.A.Q. pages to help you figure out how to use their software. It’s up to you to know what you want done.

If you say: I want a website and I put up one HTML page with your name on it, that’s your website! It’s a page available from anywhere in the world. Since you didn’t ask for anything more than a website, you got what you ask for plus a bonus because you didn’t ask for your name to be displayed but it was added as a custom service.

Extreme example but legally sound. (depending on your legal budget and the killer instinct of your lawyer)

As a client, do your homework before you call your local professional

This article is about “Make money online powered by wordpress mu”, you can find here a huge variety of articles about “Make money online powered by wordpress mu”:

Many people think that they can just make a website upload it to their server and people will visit, this of course is not correct, it is the main reason people fail at making an income online just taking the time to fully research your market can be the difference between success and failure.

Choosing your niche and researching your keywords takes time and if done wrong it will be a sure way to failure it is the most important part of building your web site and should be done before buying your domain name and web space, search engines favor URL’s with relevant keywords within the URL for example if your market is about coffee tables you could choose a domain name like coffeetables.com instead of bobsmith.com it makes sense but so many people do not take this into account when buying their domain name, of course if your web site is going to be about many subjects then a more general domain name is fine.

If you are choosing a.com domain name it is not always possible as so many domain names have been taken but you can go through your key word list to find something that is relevant and highly searched and don’t forget you can use the – between key words for example tropical-fish.com.

Keyword research is important for the domain name but it is the basis of your entire website each page of your website needs to be optimized for your key words, completely different on each page.

Each page will have a – title tag – a description – keywords and header tags this is what the search engines will see when they spider your web site and it shows them what your pages are about, this is known as on page SEO.

It’s important to know where your title and description will show to the end user of your site.

Building your website or blog:

I recommend to use a WordPress blog as your web site and a web host with cPanel, it has a one click installation of WordPress and many other web site scripts.

When adding content to your web site you need to take into account on page SEO described above.

You should have a list of key words that you are going to use for your new web site each page you create needs to have a different page title, description, keywords/meta tags, H1, H2 etc

The title of your post should also have your key word in it as this is what is picked up and indexed by the search engines, do not have pages with the same title and heading, description etc this is known as duplicate content and will not do your site any good.

If you are using a WordPress blog (which is what I always recommend) then you can install a plugin called “all in one seo” and this will help you easily add your title, description, keywords,H1, H2, H3 etc

If you are not using WordPress then you will need to add these with the software that you are using to create your site or add it to the html code manually.

If you get stuck thinking of what to write for your content just do a little research on your subject and make some bullet points then you can just expand on your bullet points to create unique content for your web pages.

Off-page SEO is backlinks to your site from other relevant web pages on the Internet, the more relevant backlinks you have to your site the more chance you have of ranking well with the search engines for your key words.

Writing articles and submitting to other blogs:

This is a good steady way to build back links to your web site, blogs especially WordPress mu blogs are often updated and therefore spidered often by the search engines so submitting articles to these blogs on a regular basis will help you gain many good quality back links.

Writing articles and submitting to article directories:

Submitting articles to article directories is also a good way to get back links to your web site, you can search on Google for article directories

Leaving comments in forums:

Forums can be good to get back links to your site, the way to do this is by leaving comments on the forum, when you leave a comment you can have a signature added to your comment this signature will have a hyperlink to your web site, make sure you use your key phrase to hyperlink to your site and don’t make spammy comments make sure the forum is related to your niche and leave a constructive comment.

To find furums in your niche just go to Google and type the key phrase related to your niche followed by forum, for example green tea forum you will get a large list of forums related to your niche.

Leaving comments in blog posts:

Leaving comments in blog posts is very much the same as forum comments, remember don’t submit spammy comments and make sure the blog is related to your niche.

To find related blogs try searching Google with the relevant key phrase followed by something like powered by WordPress mu, for example green tea powered by WordPress mu or green tea blog you can then look to see if you can leave a comment but remember many blogs have the comments feature turned off.

Social bookmarking:

What is social bookmarking? It is simply bookmarking a website like you do on your computer and saving it for later. Instead of saving them to your web browser, you are saving them to the web. And, because your bookmarks are online the search engines will find the links.

Why type design matters

Whenever you make or arrange a physical object in a particular way, you are ‘designing’ it. Whether you are deciding the length of a bracket to support a bookshelf or arranging a vase of flowers, you are practicing design. If the shelf falls down or the flowers look a mess you clearly aren’t designing very well you need to refer to some established principles to help you get it right.

The same goes for the design of text.

No matter how much, or how fast, technology changes, the human eye and habits of perception do not. Over a period of 425 years, practices have been established which are intended to help the reader to receive the message off the page as quickly and directly as possible. Of course there have been changes in fashion from time to time but these are, by nature, ephemeral and do not alter the underlying principles which are concerned with legibility and readability.

One quality about type that you are likely to be aware of is the suitability of a particular typeface for a particular job. A long legal document set in a small sans serif might seem inappropriate and difficult to read. A cover design in a self-effacing classical type is unlikely to do the job required of it.

Whether or not a document is easy to read or achieves what you want, is as likely to depend as much on the layout and the use of space as on the typeface. In order to design a layout that both works efficiently and looks good, it is necessary to have some understanding of the principles of typographic design.

Why documents look different

The usual purpose of a printed publication is to tell somebody something. The reason why documents look different from one another is not only that they have to communicate different things but they have to do it in different circumstances and to audiences with differing interest and motivation. Novels, for instance are set as continuous blocks of text, not just because that’s what the author wrote but because they are likely to be read at leisure and sitting in one place. The design doesn’t have to do more than act as a vehicle for transferring the author’s thoughts off the page to the reader. An educational book might also be read in similar circumstances to a novel, but the reader may be less well motivated. So the designer might break up the text with subheadings and diagrams to make it easier for the reader to take in.

The layout of journals and newspapers, on the other hand, allows readers to pick and choose those items that interest them. It also gives the designer and editor the opportunity to emphasize one story more than another and so influence the reader’s choice.

Readers of lists or directories are likely to be highly motivated. If you are looking for a telephone number, all you want from the design is to allow you to find it quickly. You don’t want to be sold anything; just given easy access to the number.

Many publications, perhaps the majority, contain information which the writer is very keen to impart but which the reader doesn’t care if he has or not. In this case the designer may feel the need to resort to more sophisticated design techniques to catch the reader’s attention. This will call for skill in choosing the various graphic devices available and the confidence to use them in a restrained and constructive way.

So before you choose a typeface or decide on the number of columns, think about the sort of document you are trying to produce and how it is going to be used.

Quality of Typefaces

The way in which typefaces are made has changed very rapidly. For 500 years type was cast in metal; today it is almost all produced by some form of digital output from a computer. The letter form is broken up into a raster or grid of fine dots called pixels’ in the case of a “screen font”, or drawn as a series of points connected by lines described in “PostScript Language” as is the case with Printer Fonts.

The quality of the drawing of the letterform will depend very much on the fineness of that grid and the number of pixels used to create the screen font, or the number of points used to describe the letter in the Printer Font.

Choice may be limited by the equipment available. Most office laser printers for instance, generate type at low resolution. Otherwise it is usually a compromise between high quality and economy. For example it would probably be uneconomic to produce at high resolution an internal document of which you needed only 50 copies. A publicity brochure to be widely distributed would not look good enough with type set at low resolution and should be output on a high resolution imagesetter.

The basic components of any typeface

A fairly coarse grid 300 dpi (dots per inch) is referred to as low resolution. In this case the original drawing will have been simplified to suit the limited number of pixels available. Most screen fonts are drawn to be satisfactory at this resolution. In a higher resolution output device, the grid is finer–up to 2540 dpi. Here the rendering will be indistinguishable from the original drawing. This is what the Printer font outlines are for and where they become important.

Type measurement

The point system

The units of type measurement used in the UK and USA are the point’ and the ‘pica’. (In continental Europe the corresponding units are the ‘Didot point’ and the ‘cicero’. The Didot point is very slightly larger than the British American point but the principles of their application are exactly the same.) There are 12 points to a pica. This measures approximately 1 sixth of an inch. On digital systems this has been made exactly a sixth of an inch.

It is possible to specify a typographical layout in either points, millimeters or inches but if you plan to transfer any of the production to a professional printer or typesetter, then there will be less likelihood of confusion if everyone is using the same system of measurement from the beginning. For this reason it is better to start by working in points and picas.

Typefaces are normally specified in points; columns and margins are usually given in picas and points. So a column 174 points wide would be specified as 14 pica 6 points.

How type is measured

When type is cast in metal, the printing surface the ‘face’ is mounted on a block of metal called the ‘body’. The type size measured in points refers to this metal body rather than the face itself. The proportion of the face on the body can vary considerably from one typeface to another.

This principle still applies. For example a 10 point type is one that measures 10 points from baseline to baseline when set solid (i.e. without any extra space being added between the lines). So it is possible for one 10 point type to look smaller than another but they will both take up the same depth from line to line.

Leading or line-feed is the space inserted between the lines of type. This is derived from the use of cast lines of lead inserted between lines of type to add space.

Telling typefaces apart

There are over 90,000 typefaces at philsfonts.com alone, one of our favorite suppliers of typography. Given the fact that there are over 10 major type foundries today, this is potentially hundreds of thousands of typefaces to choose from and use. That’s a lot of choices.

Of course there is some overlap from foundry to foundry and this does cause some confusion. For example: Stempel-Haas created “Helvetica” which Compugraphic then copied and called “Megaron”, it is essentially the same type face with a few minor variations. I happen to think copied for the worse. Using the original and paying the licensing fee is a sure way to get the quality you should be getting, rather than using a cheap copy. Costs are so similar these days that you may as well get the original face. Note that Adobe Systems always name the originator of the typeface first when applicable, i.e. ITC Garamond Light. When you get more familiar with the basic typefaces you will be able to spot these “rip-offs” more easily.

Most typefaces are named after their originator. Caslon, Garamond, Zapf for example. This is one way of knowing you’ve purchased the real thing.

These very wide type choices can seem rather daunting, particularly if you depend entirely on your own subjective taste. But there are some practical considerations which can help you in choosing a typeface for a particular job.

Always look for five characteristics in a typeface:

1. Whether or not it has serifs.

2. The shape of the serifs, if any.

3. The difference in the change from thick to thin in the strokes of the letters.

4. The direction of the thick part of the letter from oblique to vertical known as the ’stress’.

5. The average width of the characters called the ’set’. You can see this most readily by comparing the lengths of complete alphabets of the same point size.

Categories of Type

These divisions are very broad. Many typefaces, particularly of recent design, have characteristics which belong in more than one group.

Old face types usually have lightly bracketed serifs, with a moderate change from thick to thin strokes in the letter and an oblique stress in the direction of the thick strokes. The italic form is usually slightly decorative. The letters tend to be light in weight, although the type family usually includes a bold version.

Transitional types have serifs that are more clearly bracketed and have a more marked, but not abrupt, change from thick to thin strokes. There is a less obviously oblique direction in the heavy part of the letter.

Modern faces have fine, unbracketed (hairline) serifs with a strong contrast between thick and thin strokes. There is a strong vertical stress in the direction of the heavy parts of the letters.

Slab serifs have, as their name implies, noticeably heavy, rectangular serifs. The design of the rest of the letter can vary but there is usually little difference between the thick and thin parts of the letters.

Sans serifs are all types without the terminal strokes (serifs) at the ends of the stem, arms and tails of the letters. Decorative and Display are intended to be used for only a few words at a time. They are not suitable for continuous text.

Decorative and display faces are faces drawn with a particular style in mind where legibility may be sacrificed for the decorative needs of the face.

Letraset is a good example of a robust library of decorative type faces. Generally not used for text purposes, these are suitable for headlines where a strong voice or personality is required.

Script and Brush letters have an informality which is useful in publicity and display work but makes them unsuited for long text passages.

Ultramoderns are hard to classify but include typefaces drawn since the advent of the computer in graphic design. Several defy conventional rules about construction and readability. Some are already modern classics, such as those drawn by Neville Brody and Zuzana Licko.

What to choose and why

There is a difference between ‘legibility” and “readability”. A typeface such as Helvetica is indeed highly legible. Highway signage is designed for maximum legibility, but that’s not the same as “readability”. A long document made up of highway signage type would be pretty awful to try to read for any length of time.

For readability, many people feel that serifed types are more comfortable to read over a long, continuous text.

Sans serifs look clean and businesslike. They normally have a very wide range of weights, which makes them particularly useful in publicity and display. Sans serifs reproduce well on a smooth, matte paper that does not reflect the light.

Light weight alphabets with fairly short serifs and little difference between thick and thin strokes tend to look their best at high resolution, printed on a matte or rough paper.

Types with more robust serifs and a clearer difference between thick and thin strokes stand up better to low resolution and reproduce well on a wider range of papers.

Types with very fine serifs and a strong vertical stress look better if produced at higher resolutions. The sharp contrast between thick and thin strokes is best maintained on a smooth paper surface.

If the column width is narrow; then avoid typefaces with a very wide set. But remember that types with a very narrow set (condensed) can be tiring to read over a long text.

Type families

Both serif and sans serif typefaces are available in two basic styles referred to as roman and italic. Roman is usually the starting point when designing with type, as it is the standard for most typeset text. Italic typefaces are derived from several sources: from the exquisitely written scripts of the renaissance called Chancery to the computer modified typefaces created by “slanting” or “obliquing” the roman letterforms. As we know, Italics are usually used for emphasis.

Many typefaces are available in families of weights and other variations from condensed to extended. The advantage of working within one family is that you can be sure that the types will combine well and that the contrast between one weight and another will be sufficient for the reader to notice the difference. It is rarely necessary to use more than two or three weights in one document, but in any case be sure to use them consistently.

Type and the Computer

As most graphic work is prepared digitally on computers these days this lecture primarily concerns itself with these systems.

Computers today, both MAC and PC, have moved up to the level of genuine typesetting systems with quite a few options and advantages never available before in the history of our industry.

Type handling for page makeup software, drawing programs, even image manipulation programs has come a long way since the dawn of this computer. But there are still some basic issues to be aware of when using and managing type on the computer.

There are two parts to the typeface that need to be present in the system in order for it to work. This is the area where the most confusion reigns and attention must be paid. Each font is represented by a Screen font and a Printer Font.

The Screen Font

This is usually a ‘bit -mapped’ version of the typeface that is stored inside a document called a ’suitcase’. Usually there are several sizes and weights representing the entire family. These are used to render the font on your screen. There are also several ‘resources’ present in this file that are very important. They are necessary for the computer in order to recognize the typeface, know where it lives and what its name is.

The Printer Font

This file is where the outlines of the actual font reside. These are used by the output device or printer to actually render the font on your final output material: paper, film, laser writer. These are object-oriented drawings described in a cross-platform computer language called ‘PostScript’. These are identical in nature to the kinds of drawing objects found in Aldus Freehand, or Illustrator and are editable in certain programs.

Fonts for the Web

This portion is used with permission from Mario Sanchez

Web-Safe Fonts for Your Site

Choosing the right typeface for your website copy is important, since it will affect the way your readers perceive your page (serious and formal, or friendly and casual). Aside from this, there are also important usability concerns. For example, some font types are more easily readable than others, and some are more widely available.

You want to choose font types that:

1. fit the character of your site,

2. are easy to read on a computer screen, and

3. are widely available across many browsers and operating systems.

There are basically two types of fonts: serif and sans serif.

Serif fonts are those that have fine cross-lines at the extremities of the letter. Sans serif (”sans” being the French word for “without”) are fonts that don’t have serifs. The most common serif font is probably Times New Roman. Arial is an example of a common sans serif font.

Let’s go briefly through the most popular font types and evaluate their availability, readibility and character:

Arial:

Availability: Thoroughly available. It is probably the most common sans serif font. It is the default font for Windows, and it first shipped as a standard font with Windows 3.1.

Readability On Screen: Not the worse but definetely not the best, especially at small sizes, when it becomes too narrow and the spacing between characters too small.

Character: Has a streamlined, modern look but is also plain and boring.

For Mac users, the equivalent of Arial is Helvetica.

Times New Roman:

Availability: Thoroughly available. It is probably the most common serif font. It is the default font for web browsers. It was first shipped as a standard font with Windows 3.1

Readability On Screen: Acceptable for font sizes of 12pt. and up, but terrible for smaller sizes.

Character: Serious, formal and old fashioned.

For Mac users, the equivalent of Times New Roman is Times.

Verdana:

Availability: A widely available sans serif font, Verdana was first shipped with Internet Explorer version 3, when the exponential growth of the Internet demanded a new font that was easy to read on the screen. Readability On Screen: Exceptional. It’s wide body makes it the clearest font for on-screen reading, even at small sizes.

Character: Modern, friendly and professional.

Georgia:

Avaliability: Good. It is a serif font introduced by Microsoft with Internet Explorer version 4, when the need for a serif font which much better readability than Times New Roman became evident. Readibility On Screen: Very good. It is the best serif font for on-line reading, since it was specifically designed for that purpose.

Character: Modern, friendly and professional.

Microsoft has also popularized two more fonts: Comic Sans Serif and Trebuchet.

Comic Sans Serif was launched with Internet Explorer version 3 and mimics the hand writing used in comics. It is easy to read and is informal and friendly, but it is not considered appropriate for more serious, professional sites.

Trebuchet is another sans serif font, similar to Arial but with more character, although it can be difficult to read in small sizes.

Finally, we can mention Courier New, a serif font that was widely popular with old, mechanical typewriters, and that is now used only to present simulated computer code (if you need to present snipets of sample HTML code in your web pages, this is the font to use.

Therefore, from a usability perspective, the clear winner is Verdana. If you are inclined to use a serif font, Georgia is the best option. Arial remains a good option for specific parts of text, like headlines and titles, where a different font must be used and you can use larger sizes.
