Most people who use computers have been told they should use firewall software to keep their computers safe. Still, the majority of users aren’t aware of risks of not using a firewall on their computers. Lack of understanding of the risks and failure to use the proper protective software are the main reasons why so many people’s computers fall prey to MalWare and viruses. This is also the number one reason that identity theft is constantly increasing.

Desktop firewall software works by monitoring all incoming and outgoing data, while blocking anything that is not authorized by the computer’s owner. Computer operating systems have many points of access, called ports. You can compare software ports on a computer to harbor ports on the waterfront. But with computer ports, it’s data that’s transmitted back and forth.

The average computer operating system may support seventy thousand or more software ports. This many ports are necessary due to operate all of the computer programs we use every day. Email programs, instant messengers, the software that runs remote services and automatic updates as well as many computer games need to use ports to communicate with the world outside your personal computer. Computer networking also requires ports, in small and large scales.

On the downside, they are also greatly vulnerable to outside entry, which is why installing a desktop firewall to limit access is an must for all computers. There are a great deal of problems with viruses, SpyWare, MalWare, AdWare, and most recently RansomWare in software programs affecting many millions of computer users. Each of these forms have their own specific purposes, but ultimately they are designed to ruin your system. SpyWare and ransomware together are in their own way responsible for rise in identity theft.

Every word you type on your computer is tracked on SpyWare; RansomWare causes your computer to lock up and it can’t re-opened for Internet access until you supply your credit card information. After gathering information, these programs send it to the people who put them in place who may then use your information to assume your identity. Firewall software is designed to prevent the invasion of malicious software by monitoring data transfer and blocking the most commonly misused ports.

Firewalls allow you to specify which inbound programs will be allowed entry, and which are not. Outgoing data can be screened in the same way. This is helpful if you were affected by SpyWare, where the program infiltrates your computer, but your firewall rules do not allow it to transmit its data. Parasites are not only responsible for identity theft, they also can corrupt your operating system files to such an extent that your computer will need to be reformatted.

Data corruption may cause huge data losses for individuals who haven’t safeguarded their information. This is the reason why it’s vital to make sure to back up all your most important information, such as data of a financial nature and tax records, at least once a month. Depending on the types of data a business needs to preserve, daily and weekly data backups of certain kinds of information are recommended. That way, in case there is a problem, you will be able to restore all your information easily.

Installing a desktop firewall on your computer can protect you against computer viruses and other types of computer parasites. These parasites are created to reign havoc on your computer operating system, as well as steal your identity. It’s important to note that a firewall is as smart as its user – the majority of them won’t operate until they get confirmation from you. A good rule of thumb is to use caution when you surf the Internet, and to steer clear of suspicious emails.
