Many of my home computer clients I deal with on a day to day basis suffer from the same problem – Spyware. Over the last few years spyware have become the new “Virus” on the block and in a lot of cases they are both one in the same. There are a number of things you can do to avoid the spyware problem and it wont cost you a penny!
First off make sure you have a good antivirus program. Norton & McAfee are great, but they cost money & unless you have a quick computer things can quickly grind to a halt, especially when you first turn your computer on. I recommend using the Avast Personal Edition Antivirus. Is does everything a home user would want & updates are automatic (No user intervention required). You get a 12 month subscription & if you wish to renew it still wont cost you anything.
The next thing you need to do it get some free spyware scanning software. The two I use are Superantispyware & Malwarebytes. Do a search in Google for these programs, but to get you started I have added the link to Malwarebytes: Malwarebytes
Once you have downloaded these programs & installed them, make sure you run the updates. After updating perform a full scan of your computer & remove any spyware that is detected.
These two programs should remove the majority of your spyware, but if you are unfortunate to have one of the “Fake” antivirus programs (PSecurity, Antivirus 2009/2010) to name a couple then another tool in your arsenal is a program called Fake Antivirus Removal. Just do a search in Google & you will find a number of links to this software.
