The Garmin Nuvi 880 GPS Navigator is a sleek, compact and simple GPS that should fit in various vehicles with no problems. Featuring a spacious 4.3-inch touch screen the Garmin Nuvi 880 displays bright and vibrant maps and text at a 480 x 272-pixel resolution; the display is bright and easy to read. The screen’s brightness can be adjusted with an automatic day or night mode switch function. The touch sensitive display is responsive and the onscreen keyboard offers QWERTY or ABC format. While the keyboard is on the small side the GPS also offers predictive text to reduce the amount of typing required. The GPS offers Bluetooth connectivity, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD expansion slot, and a mini USB port. A power button is located on top, and the bottom of the unit holds an external antenna jack and power/cradle connector.

The GPS comes bundled with a vehicle mount, a car charger, a USB cable, a speech recognition remote control and the usual reading material. The Garmin Nuvi 880 is fairly simple to install and attach and stays attached despite rough terrain. The Garmin Nuvi 880 comes preloaded with City Navigator NT maps and millions of points of interest or POI. Its speech recognition capabilities on the other hand are extremely accurate allowing you to use voice commands for up to 30 functions, including entering addresses, adjusting the system volume, activating the hands-free speaker system, playing/stopping the music player, viewing the trip computer and accessing MSN Direct services.

The GPS offers support for multi-destination trips and enables way-point addition on the fly. It also offers a choice of three route preferences for faster time, shorter distance, or off-road and usage modes for automobile, bicycle or pedestrian. While you can avoid certain road types if you choose, its detour function already allows you to avoid parts of the given route with the Garmin Nuvi 880 able to do automatic route recalculation for backup.

The GPS can view maps in 2D and 3D with zoom in and out functions. Like others in the lineup, the Garmin Nuvi 880 also offer a trip information page for your speed, direction, trip time and other details. The GPS has other options of course, which includes voice-guided turn-by-turn directions with text-to-speech functionality and a built-in FM transmitter. Other features of note include an MP3 player, an Audible book player, a JPEG picture viewer with a slide show function, a world clock, currency and measurement converters, a calculator and plenty of games, including Solitaire, Sudoku, and Space Shooter. Last but not least, the Garmin Nuvi 880 can also synchronize directly with your Bluetooth capable phone allowing phone book information to be instantly transferred over to the GPS. With a rated battery life of four hours the GPS should last a fair distance but it’s probably a good idea to get a backup battery just in case.
