Why Bootable Antivirus?

In a bootable environment we are running a stripped down version of windows in a ram disk (programs are loaded directly into ram), thus the hard drive on the PC is treated as attached storage (like a flash drive).

In this state malware (malware consists of viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, rootkits, etc) is helpless and totally at your mercy. This is the best free way to remove any piece of malware with a 100% success rate.

Steps:

Please follow all the steps below:

1. Go to http://www.ubcd4win.com, then go to downloads.

2. Select a mirror with a green status. (like Mirror3 for example)

3. When you click on the mirror it will take you to another site where the download will be available.

4. Click the download link for Ultimate Boot CD and save the download to wherever you download stuff.

5. Once the installer has been downloaded double click it.

6. Choose your language

7. Click next about 3 more times and select the file path where you would like to install ultimate boot cd 4 win. Please note that you should have a drive with at least 5-10 gb of free space to allow for future plugin growth. I will choose C:UBCD4Win. The install should take a few minutes.

8. Click Yes to the MD5 Hash Check. The install will continue once the hash check succeeds.

9. Click Yes to see if a patch file exists.

10. Click the checkbox to launch ubcd4winbuilder.exe.

11. Click the “i agree” button.

12. Click “NO” to searching for windows files.

13. Obtain a windows xp operating system disc w/SP2.

14. Explore the disc and copy the entire content (all the folders and files on the windows xp cd) to any location on your computer. You should allocate at least 700 MB of free space for the windows xp disc.

15. Open UBCD4win (if it’s not already open). Click Source browse button (3 dots) and browse to your i386 folder. My path was C:WindowsXPcd for example.

16. Next go to the media output section and choose a spot for your ISO image to be created. This ISO can be burned with almost any burning software. Once the ISO is burned it will be bootable.

17. Next, click the plugins button. Don’t be too overwhelmed here, actually you should be very happy! Look at all those plugins!

18. Now it’s time to update our anti-malware software packages.

19. The first one I have on my list is a-squared free anti-spyware. Click that line and then click the config button. A command prompt will automatically open and start downloading the latest updates for that program, totally awesome, isn’t it!

20. So, now you need to update all the anti-malware programs in our plugin list. Click each one and then hit the config button.

21. After you’re done configing/updating your plugins click the close button.

22. Next, click Build.

23. Click yes to create a directory and then click I agree.

24. At this point your ISO is created and is ready to be burned.

So what’s a “favicon”, then?

It’s the thing you see in the address window of your browser. Every company that wants to have a credible web presence has one. Google’s favicon looks like a lower-case, blue “g” now; it used to be an upper-case, multicoloured “G”. It was a big branding change for them, so they thought long and hard before altering it.

Why should you have one? Here are some pretty good reasons for you to consider:

- They add to your company branding – They make your company look “with-it”, website-wise – You get to choose how your website is shown and don’t just settle for the Internet Explorer or Firefox default favicons – It’s easier to pick out graphical images than text, so they stand out from other sites in your browser’s “Favourites” lists – You can even have favicons that rotate graphic images with text

I can’t recommend them highly enough. This is how you make them.

The Quite Easy Way:

1. Make the graphic image you want to use for your favicon. Got to be small, though! 32×32 or 16×16 pixels. 2. Save the image as a bitmap, for example “favicon.bmp”. 3. Use a graphics editing program to change the bitmap file to an icon file. 4. Don’t have any graphics software? Download a free one — Irfanview, for example. Google the name for the link. 5. Change the file you made. Its name should go from “favicon.bmp” to “favicon.ico”. 6. Upload the new icon file to your website, along with the following HTML code, which you should put in the “Head” section of your page (don’t forget to enclose the code with “<>” brackets):

1. Go to the “Favicon From Pics” site (Google the name). I’m not affiliated with them in any way, so use the site with confidence. 2. Type in the text you want, if you’re using scrolling text along with your favicon, and tick the “Animate Favicon” box. 4. Click “Generate FavIcon.ico” and save the file it comes up with. 5. You’ll get a favicon file, along with a file called “animated_favicon1.gif”. Don’t worry; it’s all completely free. 6. Many of my professional peers that are webmasters, designers and hosting sellers have told me that dumbing it down doesn’t help. I find that to be arrogant because it’s one thing to dumb it down and another thing to make it understandable to those that are not IT professionals.

And I think the order of the tasks are not clearly defined.

So, you want / need a website. OK, fine. Now what do you do? Shop for hosting right?

I say no and here’s why:

Let’s just say you have a service business and you have your van and tools for the job.

Then after working with clients for some time, you notice that there is an opportunity to provide services that are not part of your current skill set.

Do you just go out and buy the necessary equipment, put that in the van and add this service to your price list?

Some people do but then when hired to provide that service or to quote a customer on performing the service, do you have the knowledge and additional training to provide it that will be satisfactory manner that the client will like, want and appreciate?

Or will you use this client as a guinea pig to test your new equipment.

I’m a webmaster, I sell hosting and design / program websites. And I can’t tell how many time I have had to pass on website projects because they are worm holes.

The problem is that the client wants a website because someone told them they needed one or a client of theirs asked for their website URL and the light bulb went off alerting them that they need a website.

Now If I go into a restaurant and after being seated, the wait person comes over to take my order and I say: Can you bring me some dinner, thank you. What did I just order?

The wait staff has no clue because I didn’t really tell them anything that they could use to fill my request!

This happens a lot when clients come to me for websites. “I need a website for my business”. OK you may ask: “What kind of business do you have?” or you may ask: “What do want the site to do for your business?”.

Most clients don’t know. Some will even get upset and say: You’re the web person, that’s why I came to you.

That is the worst kind of client and I will normally pass that person on to someone else. Because in my experience this person will not be satisfied no matter what you do.

I do try to explain to that kind of client that I want to build a website that will help build your business and satisfy your requirements. But the client has to first have some real business-related requirements.

Now I don’t to give the appearance that I only cater to a certain clientele but I also want you to know that a large portion of clients who contract out for websites are not happy with the results and blame webmasters for not delivering on what they wanted their website to do for them and their business.

The first thing I have asked clients that have come to me to have prior work reconfigured or totally rebuilt is: “What did you want done that the other design company didn’t do for you?” And: “What planning paperwork or website specs did you provide the other web designer?”

generally they didn’t have a plan going in and still don’t have a clear idea what they want.

I say all of this to make the point that website designers, web hosting sellers, and other IT professionals are not mind readers and if you as a client can’t explain what you want in a website to one of your co-workers to the point that they can see your vision, then how do expect a person, not part of your company/group/organization to know what you need?

But once you can describe in detail what you want, or even if you can explain what you need the website to accomplish but are short on detail, then most professional web designers/webmasters can make recommendations to the client about what will help you to reach your goal.

To walk in/call/email a designer without a plan is like telling a contractor to build you a house with three bedrooms and a couple of bathrooms. What do you think you will end up with when the contractors are done?

To make sure that you will be happy with the final outcome, sit down with your staff, members or family and mock up the site on paper. Visit other sites built for companies/organizations similar to yours.

Make screen captures of the pages you like. make notes how you would change those to fit your need.

Make sure that you get enough website to satisfy your need, allow for growth but avoid paying for more than you need or will even use.

It is possible, for example, to use freely available tools and software instead of paying for a full custom job that will lock you into one design company.

Consider that the #1 blogging platform in use by professionals from MSNBC, CNN, Fortune 500 and others is: WordPress. WordPress software is FREE!!!

Most hosting packages you can get now offer a script that allows you to fill out the form and click a button and your blog is ready for your content! Just like that!

Now where you may need some help is finding new themes and customizing WordPress with your logo and catch phrases. Instead of paying $1,000+ for a custom website, pay a few hundred to have WordPress customised or buy a professionally created theme from people like TemplateMonstor.com or you can use one of the hundreds of free themes available for WordPress on their site and as far as the Google can see.

Do you need a store to sell your products? Consider whether you need a full-blown eStore or do you just have a few products to sell or a book to sell per blog entry. Use PayPay Buy Buttons that can be inserted into the blog post and accept credit / debit card from your potential clients.

If you need a full-blown store, consider osCommerce stand alone eStore software or if you have a site based on Joomla (also free) the Virtuemart software modules are free and make for a very professional and stylish storefront.

The problems most people have is tweaking the software to meet your individual goals. This is where you find people with the skill set to provide those tweaks.

That work is far cheaper than having someone or some company create a full-blown site. Because all they’re doing is is making cosmetic changes or installing modules.

Your website will come online faster and if you have people in your organization that can use MS Publisher, MS Word, Photoshop, Fireworks and others, then you have the talent to work on your site.

Because the software is freely available, you can have these “Media Types” download the software and play with it on their computers. Once they demonstrate on a local system that they have the talent and knowledge to make successful modifications to WordPress, Joomla and others, you can apply those changes to the live site online with the confidence that your design ideas will transfer as you expect.

This also opens the door for those young minds to get a taste of web design for free in a safe and controlled environment – their own computer!

You can visit the Team Far North website for info about hosting for internet marketers but can be applied to any project. Investigating some of the articles there can give you an idea of how to plan for a site and how to do the research that allows you to stay in control.

I mentioned Joomla, Joomla is a CMS (Content Management System), I and many others use this as their main website. The beauty of Joomla is that you can post articles that go live right now or you can schedule them to appear and disappear based on your schedule.

I add my Halloween and Christmas articles in July and August. That way I can handle the in-town activities and / or take vacation without worrying about my site not being updated.

Now if I have a breaking story, I can always add that into the rotation with no problem. Joomla is setup to accept Google AdSense ads or ads from your local community.

Joomla also has hundreds or free and pay themes for you to choose from. Check out this demo Joomla site I use to show client how easy it is to create a site using Joomla and apply a theme. Normally it takes 10 minutes depending on the internet connection.

The same with WordPress, WordPress will scare you in that you have one form to fill out and then you copy the temporary password they create for you and you log in. Your Done!

Don’t make this harder than it has to be and be willing to approach a problem from more than one direction.

Don’t get discouraged if your dream solution turns into the impossible solution. Instead review your dream solution using a reality filter and decide what is important and necessary vs the wants and desires that your favorite Star Trek or crime show may have influenced.

Seriously consider if you, the client are the best person to make this decision.

maybe you need to speak to your neighborhood geek and share with them what you want and have them tell what is realistic and possible. Then refactor your website design based on that knowledge, considering your budget and timeline.

The bottom line is this: Web designers/coders are not mind readers. They don’t know how every business works and can’t think for you the client.

If you, the client, can’t explain your desired website wishes / request to a co-worker / member of your organization that may know what the needs are just like you but are having a hard time figuring out what you mean or what you want, how can you expect someone not familiar with your organization to know what you want or need.

Don’t get buried in so-called Web 2.0 requirements. If you need the site to have handicap access, WordPress and Joomla either have that built in or you can get a plugin / module to make that happen. Most of the time those additional add-ins are free.

Know the difference between a Windows Hosted site and UnixLinex Hosted site.

Most of the site online are Unix/Linex hosted sites.

Some sites offer database access. If you need to track members/employees, use WordPress, Joomla, or any of the productivity software, you will need a database.

There are some blog packages like Simplicity that don’t require a database and are used on smaller sites. The tiny space most ISP’s give you when you get internet service from can run Simplicity (and not mush else other than plain HTML pages)

After saying all of this, there are people that still don’t want to be bothered with all of this and would like a simple package ready to go and all it needs is to have content added to it. Understand that hosting means the hosting company gives you the web real estate and you are responsible for putting houses (web pages) on the property.

If you have problems getting your pages to work because of your own lack of knowledge, the hosting company is not responsible for solving your coding problems. Now if you have known working code but something on the hosting package is not working, then the hosting service needs to address that.

Instead of throwing away your old computer, use it as a test web server. Put PHP on it and test run WordPress, Joomla and others. PHP is free as well.

If you say: I want a website and I put up one HTML page with your name on it, that’s your website! It’s a page available from anywhere in the world. Building the firewall consists of five steps:

1. Using an effective antivirus program. When we say “effective” we mean a program that has tested from 98% to 99% effective at finding and eliminating known virus threats. Objective testing for antivirus software is done by websites like AV Comparatives

2. Combining the antivirus program with a good anti-malware program, like the ones that are recommended by Spyware Warrior  Many of the anti-malware programs now come with an antivirus engine or database, which makes them extremely effective when combined with a primary antivirus program, and the best thing is, they are completely compatible. This means that when you combine the right programs you get virtually double the protection of a single software program.

3. Using an effective firewall, configured correctly. The Windows firewall is perfectly adequate, provided the settings are correct. (Don’t allow exceptions) A third-party firewall can also be used.

4. Building a bullet proof web browser. The one we recommend is Firefox, with ad-ons like AdBlock Plus, Web Of Trust (WOT), and perhaps a script blocker.

5. Last, but certainly not least, is the development of an effective hosts file in the Windows System 32 folder and the addition of a good restricted sites list and blocked activeX controls list to protect internet explorer. Once again, you won’t have to do much here, the software will do it all for you. The entire process is easy..

The place to begin is with the correct combination of antivirus and anti-malware software. It is important to combine the software carefully, as a bad combination can do more harm than good and possibly damage your system.

1. Design the skin in your mind, before actually on screen, that way you will have a better idea of how you’re going to make the Bebo skin. Keep to the original idea as much as possible so you don’t end up with a mish mash of designs.

3. Use high quality stock images, there’s nothing worse than going to make a killer Bebo skin then realising your images are low quality and will spoil the design of your Bebo skins.

4. A good color scheme is vital; if you mess this part up forget about making a skin. Not 1 person is going to use your Bebo skins if you mess up the color schemes. To see which color schemes work search online for color charts and you will find information about which colors work together and which don’t.

5. Don’t use standard windows fonts, I’ve seen this happen so many times and it doesn’t get any better, makes we want to pull my eyes out. If you’re making Bebo skins then get some tidy fonts, there’s thousands of free fonts websites so there’s no excuses.

6. using styles can greatly assist you in making Bebo skins, maybe you like to use a certain style on your fonts or images so people may recognise that then will make them think of your skins, the best way to do this is find a style you like then save it, so that you can use over and over again.

7. Adding texture to your Bebo skins greatly assists your designs, a great way to add texture to your skins is to use free Photoshop brushes, there’s thousands of websites out there that offer free Photoshop brushes, so what are you waiting for find them now.

8. Take your time; once you have made the main image, people tend to rush the modules and even the lines, why do people do this? I have no idea, doing these little extra steps can change your Bebo skins from being good to amazing.

9. create something different, by this I don’t mean stop making sports Bebo skins, or music Bebo skins, but I mean if you usually create Bebo skins with a black background and gold font then don’t use this all the time. People will become sick of your designs and not use them any more, so mix it up a bit.

10. have fun, this is the most important of all above steps, does having your skin on 10,000 Bebo profiles or 10 really matter at the end of the day? Not to me it doesn’t, I Love Bebo Skins because I enjoy making them, I have also opened my own Bebo skin website to showcase my work and others, the main reason for doing this is because I enjoy meeting like minded people and love to see their work just as much as I like showing them my Bebo skins.

The bad link is also on the person’s profile.

The domain name in these e-mails is usually not Facebook.com. There is usually another word before the “.com”; which makes users believe they are going to Facebook when they are really not.

If you are a Facebook user, there are some ways you can keep yourself safe while using the website.

Don’t share your password with anyone. It doesn’t matter how close you are to friends or family members, you should never divulge what your login email and password is. You never know what could happen if someone you sever ties with gets on to your page; or if a family member could log on and see something you don’t want them to see. By the same token, you also shouldn’t write down your passwords and then leave it lying around. If you must write it down, put it in a safe place.

Ten years ago, it was a lot easier to protect yourself from viruses. There were only a few anti-virus solutions available. You went and bought one, installed it, and kept it updated. These days though, there are countless different anti-virus solutions. Some of them are great, some are good, and others are horrible and should not be trusted with protecting your computer. So how should you figure out which anti-virus software to use?

First off, you should consider the software and how easy it is to use. Complicated software doesn’t necessarily make it better. Some of the easiest anti-virus solutions are also some of the best. In addition, if a program is too complicated, you might miss out on a key setting that makes the difference between a virus and no virus. Go with an anti-virus solution that you feel comfortable with that you will know how to work.

Another thing to look at is just how much of your system resources does the anti-virus software take? This is important because you don’t want an anti-virus program that is constantly using up all of your RAM and making your computer slower. You don’t want to start getting in the habit of turning off your anti-virus protection just so your computer will go faster. Go with an anti-virus solution that doesn’t take up many of your resources. Make sure it’s light, but powerful.

Also, there is one of the most important features of the anti-virus software, and that is how well it works at removing viruses! If the anti-virus software has a history of failing to remove viruses, it’s best to avoid software like that. Remember, you don’t want software that’s 60% effective or 75% effective. You need software that will be protecting your computer 100%.

Something else to point out, don’t worry too much about an anti-virus programs features when it comes to spyware prevention. Sure, spyware prevention is nice, but don’t let it be the deciding factor in picking an anti-virus product. Don’t get me wrong, spyware prevention is VERY important. However there are separate free programs that can do the job when it comes to stopping spyware. I use separate anti-virus and spyware protection, and there is nothing wrong with you doing it either.
