Subsequently, years of having an internal multi-format card reader I anxiously needed to get an external one. I read up on a dozen diverse replicas and decided the amount and decent evaluations of this one made it worth taking a gamble. Currently, I am expending it on an iMac with 3 card sizes: SD, CompactFlash, and MicroSD. All works perfect. Fixing it up was instantaneous. The transfer speed is outstanding particularly when not hooked up through a USB hub.

Do I desire the cards were easier to get back out? Sure, but they’re only a part more uncomfortable to get out than my internal card reader and no poorer than any other external model. It’s good to be really satisfied with a product.

I bought a 4GB SDHC card to go with my new Nikon digital SLR at Amazon.com only to discover my reliable ancient multi-format reader didn’t work with it. I went to a limited BIG BOX stores looking for something to use. After browsing the web I decided to purchase the Kingston reader. It is a nice tiny reader. Currently I only have cameras that use SD, Micro SD, SDHC, and Memory Sticks… all these and more are read fast.

The reader comes with a very, very little USB cord attached, but Kingston also included a USB extension cord that allowed me to plug into the back ports of my desktop’s CPU with comfort. The reader’s gliding case lets you to keep cards plugged into the unit despite the fact that traveling seems difficult at first, but is a really cool notion. Using “My Computer”, the Nikon’s SDHC card’s data popped up on my screen labeled as a “Nikon data port”… very useful. I have only used the reader for guileless single card data recovery and it worked impeccably. I am very content with the fast service the vendor supplied and the operation of this well-ordered device.

I just ordered from Amazon.com the Kingston FCR-HS219 19-1 Media Reader to transfer quite a few photos from SD/SDHC cards I had to my computer. The device itself is tremendously simple to use and setup. It does not need CDs, no software, just plug and play. Placing cards in the slots is quite easy. The card does stick out of the reader, but Kingston has fixed that by letting the inside of the reader to glide back into the plastic sleeve to safeguard the card from being damaged or knocked out.

The device is stress-free to set up, easier to store, cheap and works great. I would endorse this to anybody who needs a digital media transfer solution.

Winterizing roses is an essential maintenance practice, undertaken to ensure healthy and constant growth of the plant so that it is strong and ready for spring.

How much winter protection you need to give your roses depends on your climate and the particular rose. Winterizing roses should be done in late fall after a hard frost, for most folks in the north, but for us here in the Pacific Northwest, we may not have true “hard” freezing weather until mid winter. So, for me, I usually will prune my bushes back around Halloween. By then we are starting to get some frosty nights and since we have lots of rain, the plants are done blooming anyway.

The standard advice from most rose experts is to prune your plant back by a third of it’s size. Well, I am guilty of pruning mine back nearly to the ground and they have come back even stronger! As a general rule with pruning hybrid tea roses, any cane thinner than a pencil should be removed. DO remove the oldest stems that are no longer productive.

As a group, hybrid tea roses are more tender and are most vulnerable to winter cold and need the most preparation. The timing and extent of protective measures for more fragile hybrid tea roses depends on how cold your winters are.

It is very important here with our mild rainy weather, to remove all foliage from the ground as roses are very susceptible to fungus. Diseased leaves left on the ground will allow spores to bounce back up onto the plant when the rain hits them and keep infecting the plant.

If you live in an area with relatively mild winters, you may simply mound the mulch over the plant crown 6 to 12 inches. For sudden freezing nights some protection may be needed. I have heard of everything from bed sheets to bubble wrap! Now, the bubble wrap sounds like a great idea! You have the insulating air pockets of the wrap and it’s light enough in weight than it won’t break your plants branches, like bedding may do if it becomes weighted down by a heavy dew or gets rained on.

If you don’t cut back the leaves and remove the foliage, when the freezing weather hits the frost will travel down to the roots and most likely, your plant will die. Growers understand the importance of summer watering their roses and having rose beds with good drainage, however, the plants can also be stressed if they enter the cold weather season too dry.

Many shrub roses and species roses may be hardy enough to endure your winters without protection. Check with your local Extension office for specific information. In areas where winters are unstable, with freeze/thaw cycles, roses can be weakened or even killed off. This is because the natural anti desiccant in the plant blocks in moisture, which protects the plant from the damage caused by freezing, thawing or refreezing in winters.

How your rose fares in winter depends on a number of factors–the weather, the plant’s location in the garden and, of course, the type of rose it is. The thing to do is monitor the weather reports and have your mulch and cover materials (see notes in a previous paragraph) ready to go should a cold snap be predicted.

This article will discuss Godstones and how to enable them. Godstones are used on all weapon items. The basic premise of a Godstone is to apply some sort of ability, which triggers at a certain percent, to inflict your target with.

Godstones can be found throughout the higher level content of the game. They can be found in similar ways that Manastones can be found, only with a significant less frequency. They can also be obtained as quest rewards. Once you obtain a Godstone, you can visit a Godstone Enchanter NPC, which are usually found in large cities only, and have them enable the Godstone to your weapon for a fee. You may also remove Godstones in a similar fashion as Manastones.

When a weapon becomes enabled by a Godstone, it will receive a partical effect (it will glow). This means that your weapon will now have a specific type of glow depending on which Godstone you used. Each type of Godstone (Bleed, Blind, etc) has its own color and effect.

But picking a subject you have solid experience in will enable you to write meaningful content that will pull in an audience for your blog. Without an audience you’ll soon tire of your blog and it will join the millions of abandoned blogs lost in cyberspace.

How are blogs categorized in blog search engines?

Blog search engines like Technorati and IceRocket categorize them by subject. The most general categorization, though, is personal vs. business-oriented blogs. Yours will probably fit into the former of these categories.

Are blogs only text or can they have other features as well?

Though basically consisting of text, many blog users make their web pages more attractive by adding pictures, audio and video files.

How can I make my blog easy to navigate and attractive to readers?

A successful blog usually follows a clear simple format with its articles plainly delineated, archives (in a sidebar), and a place at the bottom for visitors to leave comments. Some also include blogrolls, which are just lists of links to other similar blogs. What are some tips for setting up a blog?

- First, remember your blog is a reflection of your personality. Pick a theme or a topic close to your heart or one you know something about. Correction, one you know a lot about.

- Be consistent. If you want your blog to get really popular you need to connect with your visitors on a regular, predictable schedule. Plan on publishing at least twice a week. If that sounds like too much work, once a week is the absolute lowest you can go, say blog gurus.

- Don’t stick your neck out – or not too far anyway. Blogs can get opinionated, which is fine, but don’t put yourself at risk of a heavy-duty defamation suit. It’s fine to express your opinions – so long as you make it clear they’re just that, your opinions — and always be sure that your blog is not defaming somebody, divulging sensitive information, or giving away corporate secrets.

To get started, you first need to select suitable weblog software. This is necessary in order to create and manage your blog. There’s quite an assortment of blogging software out there. Some offer ease of design and development while other programs offer more elaborate features, for example, allowing you to add discussion forums, message boards etc. Some weblogs can be downloaded and installed directly on your system. Wordpress

Wordpress is the number one blog publishing software. Why? — because it’s freeware, easy to install, and has a minimal learning curve. Its extensive documentation and step-by-step installation guide make it a cakewalk even for a novice user. Among its most salient features are –

Easy installation – Even a newbie can get Wordpress up and going in 5 minutes. Moreover, web pages are generated dynamically by using thousands of built-in templates thereby greatly reducing your time and effort.

User Management – Restricts access to users while you’re making modifications in your weblog. So in effect you have separate access for readers and administrative users.

Typepad

Created and owned by Six Apart Limited, Typepad is a blog hosting website currently used by many large organizations in the US, such as Sky News, BBC, and MSNBC for hosting their weblogs. Launched in October 2003, Typepad today can boast that it’s the number one paid blogging service worldwide. Available in multiple languages in different parts of the world, users have three different subscription options: $4.50/month for a basic subscription to $14.50/month for the pro edition. Among its features: The software enables you to associate each article in your blog with a URL, and easy uploading and sharing photo albums from multiple authors have made this a vox populi among professional bloggers. So if writing is your passion and you want to make it a profession, you can start by signing up for Typepad.

Movable Type

The first blogging system developed by Six Apart Limited in 2001, Movable Type hosts some of the world’s top blogs, such as Huffington Post and Boing Boing. Developed using Perl, Movable Type supports LDAP protocol for efficient user management and automatic provisioning of blogs. This blogging system is extremely useful if you want to run multiple blogs using a single installation. The system is enriched with all possible features you could possibly think of, such as a customizable template library, ability to create categories and sub categories of articles, efficient user management directory servers and hordes of independent plugins that can be used to support different services, like creating discussion forums. This blogging system is an attractive choice if you have a technical bent.

Text Pattern

Developed by Dean Allen as an open source content management system, this is one of the simplest blogging systems available today. The most useful feature of Text Pattern is textile that helps in converting simple text documents into stylish HTML web pages using built-in style sheets. Text Pattern has a built-in CSS editor that simplifies the task of changing your web site’s designs, fonts, position of the text and the background color. You can also password-protect certain sections of your blogs and keep regular track of visitors and their comments. The date and time stamp of each article is adjustable and you can save drafts of your blogs for future publication. What makes it most attractive is that Text Pattern provides a built-in search engine and the users can also link XML feeds into their blogs. The simplicity of Text Pattern is its USP. Blogger

Developed by Pyra Systems and bought by Google in 2003, Blogger is one of the most popular blogging systems to date. Google subsequently acquired Picasa in 2004 and integrated the latter’s photo sharing feature ‘Hello’ into Blogger. Alexa ranks Blogger as the 9th most visited site worldwide, indicating its enormous popularity. Blogger offers multiple author support allowing the user to create group blogs. Bloggers can even earn revenue from Google AdSense by integrating it into their blogs. Another interesting feature provided by Blogger is a free add-in for Microsoft Word called “Blogger for Word” that helps blog users save their blogs directly in Blogger from their Word document. Bloggers can also customize their blog templates as per personal preferences. Habari

Symphony

Alright guys, you have all the high tech gadgets and toys in your ride. Have you forgotten some of the more practical elements to being truly prepared? This list just might make you look like the hero we all know you are.

? Leatherman or other multi-use tool: Men have steadily been decreasing in the numbers carrying a pocket knife. One of these comes in handy for cutting and opening just about any package (YAY, for more new gizmos!), wires, hoses and ropes.

? First Aid Kit: You like to play rough? Minor injuries can happen just about anywhere. Don’t get your clothes bloody, use a bandage and save your shirt.

? Small toolkit: You know the kind that comes with a multi-head screw driver, adjustable wrench and pliers. This will drastically decrease your need to call a friend and have him drive out with his tools to save you.

? Jumper Cables: Sounds like a no brainer, but simply having some on hand could give you the golden opportunity to save that cute damsel in distress.

? Cell Phone Charger: Getting directions or repair tips from a buddy over the phone becomes problematic when your phone starts dying.

? Pen and Paper: You never know when you’re going to need to write something down, so keep it in your center console if possible. Driving with your knees is a talent indeed, and it’s easier to do while jotting quick notes than searching around for something to write with.

? Water: It’s just embarrassing to overheat on the road and not even have a gallon of water that could get you off the side of the freeway.

? Wet Wipes: You’re a man’s man, but that doesn’t mean you should show up to lunch, dinner with the family or even a date with dirty hands or wipe marks on your face. A small packet of these can do wonders for your general appearance.

? Deodorant and/or Cologne: No one appreciates B.O. If you think you just might stink, add another layer of deodorant or quick drop or two of a pleasant scent. Go easy on the cologne though, there’s no need to smell like you manufacture the stuff.

? Fresh change of clothes: If you’re prone to spills or dribbles or while eating or even common underarm wetness, this could be one serious image saver. You will no longer have to try to hide that hot wing sauce that managed to sneak onto your sleeve or that soda that somehow missed your mouth and ran down the front of your white shirt. I think you get the idea here.

WordCamp, Utah

Matt Mullenweg, one of the founding developers of WordPress was the keynote speaker at Saturday’s WordCamp event in Provo, Utah. His speech included a summary of WordPress developments this year and included a large list of what’s next for the fast-growing, free blogging service.

The WordPress blogging service started with only 5 developers and 2 blogs. In the beginning the developers focused on building a system for friends who were not technical in order to help them join the web community. The goal was to develop something that was both simple and user friendly. Currently WordPress.com has about 4 million new posts and 6.5 billion page views per month. WordPress has had a strong development schedule which has continued to accelerate.

WordPress 2008 Year-in-Review

In 2007 there were 1090 commits made and so far in 2008 there are already 2840. WordPress has made 11 releases in the last year alone which is much higher than normal. The WordPress team also just added 3 new core developers increasing the development team back to five full time members. The upcoming WordPress 2.7 release is currently scheduled for November 2008.

In the year 2007 there were 2,849,349 downloads of WordPress tracked and in 2008 they have already surpassed 11 million downloads. This number does not include the number of downloads and installs from hosting companies which would significantly increase that number.

Combating Blog Spam

Over 5 billion spams were caught in the last year with 99.925% accuracy using the WordPress Akismet plugin. This shows that Akismet is staying very high on accuracy. There is a new type of spam that is now getting through due to spammers being very clever. They are starting to copy comments on other posts and change the URL referenced to gain a free link. Spammers are also paying people to go in and leave relevant comments and spam you with their links in them. The most common is spammers leaving kind remarks and compliments and having the webmaster approve the messages due to them feeling flattered by the positive remarks.

WordPress Mobility

Due to the website friendly nature of the iPhone and the success of the iPhone application (over 100k installs) WP is considering the creation of some new apps for other platforms as well including the blackberry and other mobile handsets.

WordPress Plugins

WordPress plans on improving their observance of plugin stats. Mullenweg mentioned there is a plan to watch the bottom 1000 plugins to find the new and upcoming trends. It is easier to see what is gaining fast popularity when monitoring the tail end of the plugins. He also mentioned the use of intelligent tails or the monitoring of the use of plugins and packages in order to gain valuable intelligence from the free market. Currently there are a huge number of features brought in via plugins. He mentions a few examples such as one that does real estate management and another that is an independent record label system.

Thoughts on PHP5

Matt Mullenweg predicted that PHP5 would fail early on due to its lack of major changes. He was wrong and fully admits it. PHP5 is now being used to host WordPress in 79% of WordPress installs. This means that when PHP4 usage falls below 10% or so they will pull the trigger and move ongoing development and support to PHP5 only. This will allow them to speed up and optimize the WP system.

The Future of WordPress – WordPress 2.7 Live Demo

Included during his speech was a live demo of WordPress 2.7. Version 2.7 is expected to be released sometime during November of 2008 and currently has 13,000 blogs testing it.

One of the key features of 2.7 will include a dashboard redesign. Mullenweg began by apologizing for a lack of tests regarding usability with a previous dashboard redesign. This time there is much more focus on ensuring that there won’t be issues such as the large number of user complaints which came with the removal of the edit feature in comments.

Version 2.7 also introduces a number of major changes with one of the largest being the dashboard navigation being moved to the left hand side. This new navigation has expandable categories that can be viewed in real time when you click them (i.e. no waiting for the page to reload etc.) The right side of the default dashboard setup has a quick blog post and the center features an inbox. The dashboard still has stats and other dashboard features WordPress blog owners will be familiar with. The whole dashboard has been built in ajax which allows changes to be made on the fly. Users will therefore be able to, for example, drag a section in between columns to move stuff over and around as well as the ability to hide or show specific sections.

Other key changes include:

A new sticky posts feature which will allow bloggers to keep important or interesting posts at the top of their blog’s homepage.

An insert media button has been added which allows for one click uploading of pictures, video, audio, etc. WordPress will automatically know what to do with the media uploads and will set them up appropriately.

Inline editing – you can see your actual blog and quickly edit tags, categories etc, or mass edit an entire batch of posts at once to add new tags etc.

Comments API – most commonly people edit comments and check stats, now you can moderate, approve, delete etc. and reply to comments via your mobile phone as well as the dashboard. Comments can now be threaded (you can enable it and have limits set etc.) which allows you to have conversations without the current hacks that people do to keep a conversation linear.

Keyboard Shortcuts introduced for moderating comments

Automatic plugin installation and upgrades via the browser. This includes the ability to search, upload, upgrade, install, and manage plugins from within the dashboard. It will also allow for one click installs for plugins that are in the WordPress.org library. Mullenweg also mentioned a goal of including this same feature for themes in the future (i.e. search, install, upgrade etc. all with a simple, intuitive interface).

Security is an increasingly important aspect of WordPress development. Currently there are over 20 US government entities using WP including: Air Force, Army CIA, Coast Guard, Department of Energy, Homeland Security, State Treasury, DEA, Marine Corps, FBI, National Security Agency, Navy, National Reconnaissance Agency, Geospatial Intelligence Agency, and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Mullenweg also discussed what he considers to be upcoming blogging trends. The use of media, namely photo galleries and videos are going to become more main-stream in blogs. Additionally this includes bloggers making posts that can just be a comment, a video or some small item on its own, and the ability to include the media content inline with your post. This will allow WordPress become a more complete hub of information.

He continued to discuss WordPress as a hub noting that people’s blogs will become their best possible social profile and they intend to make it so when you post something on another social site such as Twitter or YouTube it will work on WordPress. Of important note there he mentioned that your data will live on your blog and in your database so you don’t have to worry if the other site goes down, you will still have all the data and stay in control. This hub system is a long term goal of their team.

BackPress is another system he discussed which will help show the underlying framework for WP and Theme Press, their user systems, internationalization, security systems, etc. making it easier for developers to make use of the WordPress base.

Another exciting development in the works is BuddyPress. This will allow users to have take a group such as a Boy Scout, church, or team and build a small “Facebook in a box” type of system in which you can have a full set of plugins and extensions that build a small social network with activities, profiles, interests, photos, groups etc. – all in a small private group. BuddyPress will allow small groups the ability to develop their own public or private social-networking site.

Mullenweg also discussed an improved feedback loop – trying to incorporate user feedback and testing earlier in the process of making updates. A core goal with this is the desire to incorporate more “normal” people in the process of development.

Mullenweg also mentioned how he feels that this is the year of themes. While everything used to be plugin driven, themes are really taking off with new automatic plugins built into them. They are being used for things such as a monotone theme which can make your site change the backgrounds to be complimentary to the photos you are updating.

What Else if Coming Up for WordPress?

Launching sometime in the near future will be WordPress.tv which will be a video site with screencasts that will show WordCamp videos including key speakers. This service will be searchable, include tags, and will also include HD video content.

TV screens are now being used for far more purposes than just home entertainment. Digital signage is a fast growing industry where LCD and plasma screens are being used for the displaying of advertising and branding messages.

However, modern LCD screens (and plasmas) simply can’t be taken into these sorts of areas without some consideration in ensuring the devices are protected and able to operate in the optimum conditions.

However, digital signage is often placed in areas that are quite removed from the warmth and sterility of a front room. Busy retail centres and outdoor locations not only mean lots of people, which heightens the risk of accidental damage through knocks and impact (both accidental and deliberate) but also screens are often placed in cold or hot environments and even in outdoor locations.

Ensuring the LCD or plasma screen is able to operate, no matter the external conditions, is often the task often the task of the digital signage enclosure. Any LCD enclosure or other housing for digital signage needs to ensure that the perfect working environment for the TV screen exists inside the enclosure.

Some protection that is required by screens is quite obvious. Outdoor digital signage for instance needs to be housed in a weatherproof or waterproof TV enclosure to ensure the screen is kept dry. However, not all the protection that an LCD enclosure offers is that obvious.

Air flow is vital for most electronic devices, TVs included. Without a flow of air to help carry away the heat build up hot spots can develop and the screen can soon fail. Any LCD enclosure therefore requires internal fans to help remove this heat.

In some conditions, such as in outdoor areas in hot climates, air conditioning has to be considered for inside the LCD enclosure as does heaters in locations where temperatures regularly drop below zero.

So while many people assume an LCD enclosure is just a waterproof metal box for protecting digital signage in outdoor locations, there is more to them than that as inside every LCD enclosure should exist the perfect operating environment for an LCD TV screen.

There are some simple steps that you can take to protect every WordPress installation you set up. But why worry about security?

This is why:

I have had two WordPress blogs hacked into in the past. That was at a time when I was doing very little internet marketing, and until I found time to address the situation (months later), these sites were penalised in the search engines. They were not removed, but the rankings were reduced.

I fixed it in the end, but I did not deal with it for several months. For a good amount of time, I was unaware even of the problem.

The result? I estimate that I lost out on a couple of hundred pounds of advertising revenue.

Much of WordPress security is simply common sense. Are you using a strong password? Are you using a different password for every website?

For years, I did not do that. I had three or four passwords I commonly used. But there are two ways which you can always generate a good, strong password for every site you register with. (Of course, this includes your WordPress blogs.)

The weaker approach (but still pretty good) is to start with a common password; add some numbers to it that you are likely to remember, such as the house number of your first address; then add the first few, say, five letters of the domain name. For example, if the password you were starting with was reindeer230, if you were using a site called example.com, that would become reindeer230examp. That is a pretty strong password. This technique protects against dictionary attacks where an attacker may repeatedly try to log into your account using English words, words of other languages, names, and so on.

The stronger approach, and the one I personally recommend, is to use one of the password generation and storage plugins available for your browser. Many people like RoboForm, but I think after a free trial period, you have to pay for it. I use the free version of Lastpass, and I recommend it for those of you who use Internet Explorer or Firefox. That will generate secure passwords for you; you then use one master password to log in.

Now we are getting into things specific to WordPress. Whenever you install WordPress, you have to edit the file config-sample.php and rename it to config.php. You need to install the database details there.

There are a few other changes you should do as well.

There is a section of config-sample.php that is headed “Authentication Unique Keys.” There are four definitions that appear within the block. There is a hyperlink within that section of code. You need to enter that link into your browser, copy the contents that you get back, and replace the keys you have with the unique, pseudo-random keys provided by the site. This makes it harder for attackers to automatically generate a “logged-in” cookie for your site.

The next step is to change the table prefix from the default “wp_”. This is in the WordPress Database Table Prefix section. It does not really matter what you change it to; you can use alphanumeric characters, hyphens and underscores. This should thwart so-called SQL injection attacks, where an attempt is made by an attacker to cause WordPress to run some SQL code that has an undesirable effect on your site. That code could add a new user with superuser privileges to your WordPress site.

Note that you should only do this last step for new installations. If you want to do it for existing installations, you will also have to change all the table names in the database.

Finally, installing the WordPress Security Scan plugin will check most of this for you, and alert you to anything that you might have missed. It will also tell you that a user named “admin” exists. Of course, that is your administrative user name. You can follow a link and find instructions for changing that name, if you wish. I personally believe that a strong password is good enough protection, and since I followed these steps, there have been no successful attacks on the numerous blogs that I run.

Finally, WordPress Security will also tell you that there is no htaccess in the wp-admin/ directory. You can put a.htaccess file into this directory if you wish, and you can use it to control access to the wp-admin directory by IP address or address range. Details of how to do that are readily available on the net.

However, I recommend that you install the Login LockDown plugin in place of any.htaccess controls. That will stop login requests from being allowed from a specific IP address for an hour after three failed login attempts. If you do that, you can still access your admin panel while away from your office, and yet you still have good protection against hackers.
